SANDAKAN – Chaos erupted during a Warisan campaign in Kg Sundang Laut, Batu Sapi when a gate crasher started to shout “Hidup GRS!” on stage.

Datuk Akbar Khan Abdulrahman, father of GRS’ Batu Sapi candidate Khairul Firdaus, suddenly rushed on stage and loudly chanted “Hidup GRS!” before some 700 people.

This was right after Karamunting Warisan representative George Hiew’s speech, during which he said “Undi Warisan!”

This caused a public stir as Akbar received a loud “boo” from the crowd, as several Warisan members hurriedly removed him from the scene.

However, no one was hurt in the incident, and the emcee urged Warisan supporters to remain calm and ignore Akbar.

Akbar was seen at the function with two men before Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal arrived.

A couple of minutes after Akbar was taken to the side, several police officers appeared to try to calm the situation.

It was under control until Akbar was leaving the venue. His men again provoked Warisan’s members, almost resulting in a fight.

A handful of Warisan’s men also tried to stop their fellow members from attacking Akbar and his men.

Warisan’s Batu Sapi candidate Alias Sani, who is also Sekong assemblyman, later told reporters that his party has a police permit for the event, and Akbar’s action could be construed as an offence.

He said he will take legal action against Akbar as well as lodging a police report on the incident.

Alias later approached his supporters to not go near Akbar, who left Kg Sundang Laut soon after.

It was learned that Akbar showed up at Shafie’s campaign event at Taman Mawar, Batu Sapi last night, but had watched from the side.

Akbar is a local veteran politician and a former Libaran MP (1995-1999) under Umno.

Meanwhile, Shafie said other parties should adhere to the rules, and not disrupt any campaign events.

“This is our event, why are you coming to our event? Just want to see me is it? You can see me somewhere else.

“It is a democratic process that’s why we have the police permit,” he said, adding that the incident was a small matter not worth mentioning. – The Vibes, November 8, 2022
