PERMATANG PAUH – Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) Nurul Izzah Anwar says that her coalition is increasing efforts to galvanise constituents to come out and vote in the 15th general election (GE15) this Saturday.

When asked by The Vibes whether she could match her father’s majority in the Permatang Pauh constituency back in 1995, Nurul Izzah shrugged off the question and instead stressed on her party’s efforts in rallying voters.

“We are focused on galvanising voters for GE15, as it is important that they elect a government,” said Nurul Izzah after an event in Mengkuang here today.

Meanwhile, Ammar Muhamad Pauzi, who is an aide in Nurul Izzah’s GE15 campaign, opined that other parties’ tactics of fear-mongering for votes are not effective in deterring support for PH.

“The notion that each vote for Anwar is a vote for DAP is archaic, as ‘votes for Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional are votes for (Datuk Seri Ahmad) Zahid (Hamidi) and (Tan Sri) Muhyiddin (Yassin)’ could be said as well,” said the former PKR education exco member.

“Fear-mongering the voters by using the sentiment of race and religion will not work as the people are no longer susceptible to it,” he added.

Nurul Izzah’s grassroots presence

A neighbourhood community leader, wishing to be known only as Azlan, said that the incumbent Permatang Pauh MP does not turn a blind eye to her constituents.

“I cannot say for other areas, but Nurul Izzah has been helping our community when we are in need. The same goes for her parents,” he told The Vibes.

“Whoever claims that she does not visit the grassroots is simply untrue, and I vehemently disagree with their statement,” he added.

Azlan also clarified that the process of applying for requests and complaints is satisfactory under the administration of Nurul Izzah, as each request goes through some consideration.

“The committee members have made multiple applications for the betterment of our community,” he said.

“Understandably, these requests cannot simply be approved overnight. We made applications for fencing in our area last June, it was approved and built in September.

“For people who don’t know, they might perceive it as a ploy by politicians for their campaigns. But those of us who actually made the application know better,” he added.

Nurul Izzah is on the campaign trail again after floods hit following Friday’s downpour.

She will be defending her parliamentary seat in a four-cornered fight with BN’s Mohd Zaidi Mohd Said, PN’s Muhammad Fawwaz Mat Jan, and Pejuang’s Mohamad Nasir Othman.

Former Permatang Pauh MP Anwar Ibrahim garnered a majority of 23,230 votes in this constituency in 1995, when he was still Umno deputy president.

He then defeated DAP’s Abdul Rahman Manap and PAS’ Mazani Abdullah, who received 4,715 and 4,071 votes, respectively. – The Vibes, November 13, 2022
