KUALA LUMPUR – The Election Commission (EC) has been asked to decide immediately whether the 15th general election will be continued or postponed to an appropriate day following flooding reported in several areas nationwide.
PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar said the decision is important to allow candidates and voters to fulfil their obligations.
According to Berita Harian, the EC has been asked to make a decision without being influenced by caretaker prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
“I think it is important to understand the election process, whereby there is a provision to postpone (elections). Not to redo the election, but to postpone it, so please do not misinterpret my intentions.
“The ones who demanded and called for the election to be continued are Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN), even though they know that it’s the flooding season.
“So when it commenced, we respected the process,” she said during a press conference at Yayasan Penanti in Bukit Mertajam today.
“It is the same process if we need to postpone elections in areas such as Klang (Selangor), which is currently having floods. We need to do it now to ease the burden of the candidates as well as voters,” she said.
Meanwhile, at the same press conference, Penang PKR vice-chairman Goh Choon Aik supported Nurul Izzah’s call.
Goh said that many locations have started flooding, including the schools that serve as polling centres.
“The EC needs to make an immediate decision whether this election will continue or be postponed to another date,” he said. – The Vibes, November 17, 2022
