KUALA LUMPUR – Perikatan Nasional (PN) leaders are set to gather for a meeting at coalition chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s home in Bukit Damansara today, following PN’s resounding success at the national polls (GE15).
Believed to be in the residence currently are PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang and his deputy Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man as well as Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.
Also spotted making his way into the housing area was Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.
Media members have been stationed outside the compound since approximately 1pm.
Based on official GE15 results from the Election Commission (EC) as of 4.30am today, PN managed to secure a shocking win with 73 parliamentary seats.
During a press conference at about 3am today, Muhyiddin claimed that PN had received a letter from Istana Negara with instructions from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
He added that while the coalition is willing to work together with any party that agrees and is in line with its values, cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH) is out of the question.
Just minutes later, PH chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim asserted that the coalition has the necessary numbers to form a government and will be handing over a letter on the matter to the Agong in due time.
PH had garnered a total of 82 parliamentary seats, including one won by electoral partner Muda.
Meanwhile, over at the World Trade Centre, Barisan Nasional (BN) linchpin Umno leaders had similarly gathered to attend a series of meetings, including of the party’s political bureau and supreme council.
The coalition, led by Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, was once considered the dominating force in Malaysian politics but suffered a crushing defeat after only winning 30 federal seats in GE15.
Calls for Zahid’s resignation have since come from top Umno leaders, including Tan Sri Noh Omar, who also resigned as Selangor Umno liaison chief and former minister Datuk Halimah Mohd Sadique.
At around 2pm today, Istana Negara issued a statement requesting Dewan Rakyat speaker Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun to inform coalition and party leaders of their alliances which will help form the government.
The politicians have until 2pm tomorrow (November 21) to submit the above as well as a prime minister candidate who has secured the support of the Dewan Rakyat. – The Vibes, November 20, 2022
