KUALA LUMPUR – Chants urging Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to relinquish his position as Umno president reverberated across Umno’s very own headquarters here, as pressure continues to mount on the party’s top leader.
Shouts of “Undur Zahid” (step down Zahid) and “No DAP, no Anwar” echoed inside the building as 10 members from Umno’s Bukit Bintang division called on the president’s resignation following the party’s disastrous election performance.
KLCC Umno branch chief Datuk Seri Dzulkarnain Taib said as with any other organisation, the leader of the party should take responsibility if the political outfit fails to achieve its objective.
He said while party members still love Zahid, someone from Umno has to pay the price for what has happened.
“In this case, Zahid must take full responsibility after Barisan Nasional (BN) failed for the second consecutive time to form the government. We regret that this time, the number of seats won has further dwindled.
“Zahid should take the honourable move of stepping down before the Umno Supreme Council pushed for a motion of no confidence against him,” he told reporters here.
Asked if such a move is taking place, Dzulkarnain said the Bukit Bintang division will lead the push, adding that he believes many more Umno members share the same sentiment.
“We may be sacked from the party for doing this, but we don’t care. We want to voice Umno’s voice and conscience.”
Mohd Zailan Mokhtar, who is Umno Jalan Hang Jebat branch chief, said if Datuk Seri Najib Razak could graciously resign as Umno president previously following its election defeat in 2018, Zahid should be able to do the same.
He added that there have also been murmurs that Umno is currently considering cooperating with Pakatan Harapan (PH) to form a coalition government, hence their “No DAP, no Anwar” chants.
This is in reference to any political pact with PH component DAP and the coalition chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“The grassroots have poured all our energy for BN, and even in Umno’s general assembly, we have explicitly said no Anwar, no DAP. So, why are we considering this?” – The Vibes, November 20, 2022
