KUALA LUMPUR – Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s ongoing corruption case will not be discussed in the cabinet, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
In a press conference at DAP headquarters here, Loke said Zahid’s case is a court matter, and is not related to political cooperation with other coalitions in the unity government.
“That depends on the court. We in the cabinet must discuss national agendas, not our respective cases.
“(Zahid’s court cases) will not be mentioned. We will only discuss matters about the people and the country.”
Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the appointments of Zahid and Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof as deputy prime ministers.
Zahid was also given the Rural and Regional Development portfolio.
Prior to the announcement, it was wildly speculated that Zahid as Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman would be appointed deputy prime minister despite his ongoing corruption case.
He is facing 47 charges of money laundering and criminal breach of trust involving Yayasan Akalbudi funds.
His appointment sparked ire from citizens and politicians alike, accusing Zahid of benefiting by having a position in the government.
Nonetheless, an analyst believes that Zahid’s presence in the cabinet could benefit the nation by giving it more stability, as it reduces the likelihood of BN exiting the current government.
Previously, several non-governmental organisations and civil society groups have since issued statements expressing their objection to naming those involved in court cases in the cabinet.
Responding to this, Anwar said he would consider views from all parties in ongoing discussions on cabinet appointments.
“But as we all know, from the legal point of view, only when someone is sentenced (can they be considered guilty)... the rest, we will consider.” – The Vibes, December 3, 2022
