KUALA LUMPUR – The Communications and Digital Ministry will look into improving the public warning system, especially for disaster hotspots that have been identified by the Meteorological Department.
Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the ministry has had talks with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission on joint efforts to improve the warning system with the help of telecommunications companies.
In a press conference in Putrajaya, he also advised the public to take warning notices issued by the Meteorological Department seriously.
“The government will have to look into the dissemination of such notices, especially on risky activities.
“We will also need feedback from the relevant agencies and departments on how to improve our national warning system.”
This comes after 13 people died in a landslide at a campsite in Batang Kali this morning.
Fahmi urged the public and media to not share pictures and videos of the victims, especially footage of children.
“Please be more sensitive as the victims grapple with this tragedy.”
Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa has said that some of the bodies have been sent to Sg Buloh Hospital while the rest are still at the incident site.
A total of 94 victims were involved, of which 25 are missing as search-and-rescue operations continue, said police, adding that all the victims are locals.Among the dead is a boy, a man, and six women. – The Vibes, December 16, 2022
