BATANG KALI – The bodies of a mother and her daughter were found locked in an embrace by search-and-rescue personnel, bringing the death toll for the Batang Kali landslide to 18.

The two bodies were found in Sector C (Riverside) at 4.40pm.

According to a Selangor Fire and Rescue Department spokesman, the daughter is estimated to be 3-years-old.

This leaves 15 people unaccounted for after the 2am disaster.

“Some 230 personnel from the Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Negri Sembilan Fire and Rescue Departments will continue the search-and-rescue operations until late night.

“However, search-and-rescue efforts may be stopped if the weather turns bad.”

A press conference is also expected to be held by Hulu Selangor district police chief Suffian Abdullah this evening.

It had been reported earlier that as of 1pm today 16 people were confirmed dead and 17 missing in the incident that occurred at the Father’s Organic Farm – where schoolteachers, students, and families were camping out, mostly in tents.

Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming has said that the three campsites affected had been operating illegally for at least two years. – The Vibes, December 16, 2022
