IPOH – Datuk Mohamad Zahir Abdul Khalid, 54, was re-appointed as Perak speaker today for a second term.
Menteri Besar Datuk Saarani Mohamad (Kota Tampan-Umno) nomination of Zahir was supported by Human Resources, Health, and Indian Community Affairs Committee chairman, A. Sivanesan (Sungkai-DAP).
Canning assemblyman Jenny Choy was appointed deputy speaker.
All 58 assemblymen also took their oaths of office at the first meeting of the first session of the 15th assembly, including opposition leader Razman Zakaria who won the Gunung Semanggol state seat, while Kepayang assemblyman Nga Kor Ming was absent as he was involved with today’s Dewan Rakyat sitting.
In his speech, Zahir advised assemblymen to maintain good manners during debates and asked for the cooperation of all parties to ensure that the session runs smoothly.
Today’s session was adjourned and will continue tomorrow for the opening ceremony to be graced by Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah.
On November 21, Saarani was appointed Perak menteri besar before he announced the portfolios of all 10 members of the state executive council.
Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional agreed to form the Perak government after the conclusion of the 15th general election, of which the former garnered 24 seats and the latter, nine, while Perikatan Nasional managed to obtain 26 seats. – Bernama, December 19, 2022
