BANGKOK – Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his happiness over the positive response from his Thai counterpart Prayut Chan-o-cha regarding the decades-long conflict in Southern Thailand, involving the Muslim population there.

Speaking to a press conference after his first official visit to the nation known as the “Land of Smiles,” Anwar said that based on their discussion, Prayut had shown his willingness to find lasting peace for his citizens.

“I’ve said that the trust deficit begins at the top. Based on our discussion with the Thai prime minister, I can see that they are willing (to discuss the issue). Before, this was a sensitive matter, we cannot openly speak about it.

“Now, they seem to be more open and we had a good discussion. We cannot resolve this at that level only. We will need (the buy-in) of the military, police, the intelligence agencies, religious and community leaders, education, and the involvement of NGOs (non-governmental organisations).

“We must plan to build a strong network,” he elaborated regarding the peace process for Southern Thailand, where Malaysia will be the facilitator.

However, Anwar also stressed that Putrajaya cannot interfere in Bangkok’s affairs regarding the skirmishes as it is a domestic matter.

Separately, the Malaysian prime minister was also happy that the discussion on economic matters will be bearing fruit.

The trip had focused on Thailand’s food security and technology, as well as its digital, transportation, and energy technology which Anwar had described as more advanced than Malaysia’s.

“In fact, next week there will be a special trade delegation coming here to look at possible investments,” said Anwar. – The Vibes, February 10, 2023
