KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia lost RM622.4 million to floods last year in public and private assets and infrastructure, the Malaysian Statistics Department (DoSM) said today.
In a special report on the impact of floods in Malaysia for 2022, chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the losses include the value of damages to living quarters, vehicles, businesses, and industrial premises.
“For damage to the agricultural industry and public assets and infrastructure, data from relevant government agencies were used,” he said.
The amount lost in 2022 is the equivalent of 0.03% of the country’s nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and is lower than the RM6.1 billion lost to floods in 2021, he added.
The biggest losses to floods last year were public assets and infrastructure at RM232.7 million, followed by living quarters (RM157.4 million), and agriculture losses (RM154.5 million).
Business premises contributed to RM50.3 million in losses and vehicles, RM18.8 million.
Losses from manufacturing amounted to RM8.7 million.
By state, the east coast state of Terengganu suffered the highest losses, amounting to RM215.2 million, followed by Kelantan (RM153.1 million) and Pahang (RM144 million). – The Vibes, February 23, 2023
