KUALA LUMPUR – After a week of trading barbs over Yayasan Albukhary’s tax exemptions, Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng has filed a police report against former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for criminal defamation.

Speaking to reporters outside the Dang Wangi district police headquarters here today, Lim claimed that Muhyiddin’s “baseless accusations” were an attempt to shift attention from the Pagoh MP’s ongoing corruption charges.

Lim said he made the police report because Muhyiddin’s claims – that a non-Muslim finance minister revoked the tax exempt status of a Muslim charity – could stir racial tensions and threaten national security.

“I have asked him (Muhyiddin) to retract the statement and apologise, but until today, he has failed to do so,” Lim said.

“When you say things like that, you create an atmosphere that is very unhealthy...that is very sensitive,” he said, adding that once a lie has been spread, no matter how much damage control one attempts to do, the lies cannot be undone.

Likening Muhyiddin’s actions to that of former US president Donald Trump, Lim warned that such lies were part of a dangerous ploy by the opposition to sow discord by spreading false narratives in the lead up to state elections.

“Run a clean campaign, a positive campaign…not one based on lies, hate, and fear.”

Accompanied by his lawyer RSN Rayer, Lim’s report was filed under Section 499 of the Penal Code for criminal defamation, as well as Sections 504 and 505(C) of the same code for breach of peace and public mischief respectively.

Also present were DAP MPs Howard Lee, Young Syefura Othman, Syerleena Abd Rashid, Teresa Kok, Khoo Poay Tiong, and Dr Kelvin Yii. – The Vibes, March 22, 2023
