KUALA LUMPUR – The second meeting of this year’s Dewan Rakyat session has been brought forward by three weeks to allow MPs to perform their haj pilgrimage at the end of June.

Speaker Datuk Johari Abdul said he had proposed the matter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the leader of the House, and that it was agreed to.

The new date has now been fixed from May 22 to June 15, with the lower House convening for 11 days during this period.

The second meeting was previously scheduled to take place from June 12 to 27, with the last day of the sitting being just two days ahead of Hari Raya Aidiladha.

Johari said the change is done in line with Standing Order 11(2) of the Dewan Rakyat, which grants the leader or deputy leader of the House the power to vary the dates of meetings in a particular session that have been fixed.

“This (decision) is following my request to the prime minister, as many honourable members of the House will be performing their haj pilgrims in Mecca this year and need to make the necessary preparations.

“I will issue a written notice to all members of the House later,” he said today. – The Vibes, March 22, 2023
