KUALA LUMPUR – The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has set up an internal investigation committee to probe into a recent incident that saw some of its enforcement officers allegedly assaulting and scolding an elderly man with his pet dogs.
In a brief Facebook post, the local authority said the case is currently being investigated by the committee after video clips of the alleged incident made the rounds on social media.
“MBPJ will not compromise or protect any of its staff members if they are found to have committed offences,” it added.
Earlier today, the man involved in the incident lodged a police report at a police station on Jalan Klang Lama.
In the report shared with The Vibes, the 69-year-old said that when he attempted to protect his pet dogs from the officers, one of them had hit him with the catchpole used to capture stray dogs, causing the aged man to suffer a swollen jaw.
Previously, The Vibes reported that a resident who witnessed the incident had taken to social media to admonish the officers for their rough behaviour.
“I told them this is not the right way to carry out their duties, and the officer responded, ‘kita government, memang begini buat kerja’ (we are government officers, this is how we do our work).
“Not one person in their team questioned or stopped the other officer from violating the old uncle who was all alone when the incident took place,” the resident wrote.
According to the resident, the elderly man said the officers did not explain their intention and failed to present any official identification prior to their physical attacks on him.
Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung subsequently issued a letter to MBPJ’s integrity unit requesting for clarity on the standard operating procedures used by council officers when conducting dog captures. – The Vibes, March 24, 2023
