MELAKA – Zakat Melaka expects zakat fitrah (personal tithe) collection to reach RM5.8 million this year compared with RM5.6 million last year.

Its deputy chief executive officer, Zuhri Iskandar A. Rahman, said the number of zakat fitrah payers last year increased to 673,673 people from 661,703 people in 2021.

“This year Zakat Melaka appointed 1,010 amil (tithe collector) state-wide to collect zakat fitrah throughout the month of Ramadan.

“The prescribed zakat rates for this year are RM7, RM14, and RM21 and zakat payers can fulfil their obligations according to their affordability,” he told reporters after the Tautan Kasih Zakat Melaka programme at Semabok Perdana here today.

Commenting further, Zuhri Iskandar said Muslims in Melaka can also pay zakat fitrah through amils stationed in mosques and surau as well as payment counters at supermarkets or Ramadan bazaars in the state.

He said Zakat Melaka provides six channels online for the convenience of Muslims to fulfil the the fourth pillar of Islam through the Zakat Melaka Portal at www.izakat.com; Melaka Pay portal at melakapay.melaka.gov.my, the Melaka Pay app, Maybank Zakat Fitrah Centre QR code, and Maybank2u internet banking.

Earlier, he said Zakat Melaka has allocated RM150,000 for 100 poor and orphaned children throughout Melaka for the Tautan Kasih programme through the provision of sets of clothes and duit raya in conjunction with the upcoming month of Syawal.

“The selected recipients are five underprivileged students from each school and it is hoped that this gesture will cheer them up in preparation for the celebration.

“We are grateful to the tithe payers in this state for their zakat contributions and hopefully with the help of the tithes we can reduce the burden of the less fortunate, especially the asnaf in this state,” he said. – Bernama, April 11, 2023
