DEPUTY Chief Minister I, Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid, was present at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Penang headquarters at Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah this morning.

His presence is believed to be to assist in the investigation into the alleged misuse of zakat funds linked to him.

His Proton X70 vehicle, which took him to the agency's office premises, was seen at about 9:48 am, before he entered the building with an assistant, while another officer arrived shortly afterwards.

Penang MACC director, Datuk S Karunanithy, when contacted by Sinar Harian, confirmed the matter.

It is understood that the presence of Mohamad, who is also the Yang Dipertuan of the Penang Islamic Religious Council, was to record a statement following an investigation that was initiated after a State Assemblyman (ADUN) raised the issue in the State Assembly session at the end of last year.

At the end of last month, the MACC was reported to have obtained several relevant documents for the purpose of further examination and investigation into the case.

Karunanithy had previously informed that the investigation was being conducted to confirm the allegations that arose and to determine whether there were any elements of misconduct or issues related to governance.

Previously, Pembela Tanah Air (Peta) activist Chegubard, or his real name, Badrul Hisham Shaharin, shared a statement by a Peta coordinator, Azam Melaka, regarding the embezzlement of zakat money in a state. – March 2, 2026
