KUALA LUMPUR – A thunderstorm and heavy rain warning has been issued for parts of Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah and Sarawak until 6pm today, even as northbound traffic on parts of the PLUS highway increases this afternoon following the long Hari Raya Aidilfitri weekend.

The Meteorology Department (MetMalaysia) in an advisory on Twitter said thunderstorms and heavy rain can be expected in Kedah (Yan, Pendang, Kuala Muda, Sik, Baling, Kulim, and Bandar Baharu) as well as on the Penang mainland.

All of Perak and parts of northern Selangor and along the coast (Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, and Klang) will also experience heavy rain and storms.

Some inland areas in Pahang (Jerantut, Temerloh, Maran, and Bera) will also experience inclement weather, as will parts of Negri Sembilan (Seremban, Port Dickson, Jempol, and Tampin) as well as Jasin in Melaka.

Johor’s western and southern coast as well as inland areas (Tangkak, Segamat, Muar, Batu Pahat, Kluang, Pontian, Kulai, and Johor Baru) will also be affected.

Highway concessionaire PLUS, meanwhile, reported via several tweets this afternoon slow traffic in the northbound direction on the North-South Highway, from areas in Johor towards Ayer Keroh, Bukit Beruntung, Seremban, and Nilai.

Traffic is also slow from Slim River to Bidor and northwards from Gopeng and Ipoh, while traffic in the opposite direction towards the Klang Valley is also slowing on some stretches of the North-South Highway.

Today is the last day of the long Raya break.

In Sarawak, meanwhile, MetMalaysia said thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected until 6pm in Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Kapit, Bintulu, Miri, Marudi and Limbang, while in Sabah, the west coast and Tawau will be affected. – The Vibes, April 24, 2023
