KUALA LUMPUR – Senior lawyer Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik will lead Rumah Bonda founder Siti Bainun Ahd Razali’s appeal against her conviction by the sessions court for abusing and neglecting a teenager with Down Syndrome.

New Straits Times reported that defence lawyer Nur ’Aminahtul Mardiah Md Nor informed high court judge Datuk Ahmad Bache of this development during case management this morning.

Nur ’Aminahtul and lawyer Mohammad Farhan Maaruf will also work with Hisyam on the appeal.

Hisyam is a prominent lawyer, having served last year as lead counsel in former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s appeal to the Federal Court against his conviction for graft in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case.

On May 3, sessions court judge Izralizam Sanusi convicted Siti Bainun of the offences against the teenager known as Bella.

She was sentenced to 10 years jail for negligence, and 12 years for abuse, to be served concurrently.

She was also granted a good behaviour bond for five years, with one surety and RM5,000 collateral, and ordered to serve 200 aggregate hours of community service within six months after her jail term ends.

The court has set May 18 to hear Siti Bainun’s appeal for a stay of execution. – The Vibes, May 8, 2023
