TAMPIN – The unity government will continue to get the support of Negri Sembilan voters despite Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) claim of a “Malay tsunami” in the upcoming state election, said Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Zahid, who is also deputy prime minister, said that all parties are free to express their views in the country’s democratic system.

“We are very confident that the people need stability and in Negri Sembilan, the priority is in terms of economic development and the people also need jobs. The people of Negri Sembilan will choose a government that can help them.

“They (the opposition) have to change their tactics not only in Negri Sembilan but also in Penang and Selangor, their leaders in Selangor also said (the same thing),” he told reporters after attending an Aidilfitri open house held by the Negri Sembilan Umno liaison committee here today.

Zahid was commenting on PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s statement today that he was confident of securing at least 70% of votes, especially Malay votes, in the coming polls in six states.

Meanwhile, Zahid – who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman – said that BN would be fielding more new faces and young candidates in the state elections to rejuvenate the party and give opportunities to the youth.

“It has been proven in the Melaka and Johor elections. This trend is a hope for the people,” he added.

On the claim that a Melaka assemblyman from the party will join PAS, Zahid said he would meet the assemblyman soon. – Bernama, May 20, 2023
