SANDAKAN – A tourist from China who allegedly walked around naked on his hotel room’s balcony in Semporna is now facing the risk of imprisonment for an obscene act in public.

The 40-year-old suspect was detained by the police last Thursday night after they were alerted of the incident following a nine-second video that has gone viral since the same day.

The man’s alleged act was captured in a video by a passerby and the clip was shared widely on WhatsApp and Facebook.

Semporna police chief Superintendent Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the suspect has been remanded for four days until June 12 for further investigation.

The case is investigated under Section 294 (a) of the Penal Code for obscene acts in a public place, which carries a punishment of maximum three months imprisonment or fine, or both, if found guilty.

“The individual who recorded the incident is also asked to come and assist in the investigation by contacting Inspector Khadijah Mohd Seruji, or coming to Semporna headquarters police station, or any nearest police station,” Farhan added. – The Vibes, June 10, 2023
