KUALA LUMPUR – Muda’s participation in the upcoming state polls in Selangor under Pakatan Harapan (PH) remains uncertain, with state Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari it was still up to PH leaders to decide.
Amirudin said that it was determined during a PKR meeting that the final say on the youth-based party’s participation in the state election will be left to the PH presidential council.
“(Whether or not Muda is featured in the polls) will be decided by PH, with the understanding that Muda was PH’s partner for the 15th general elections,” he said at a press conference today.
“This (Muda having to discuss with PH its role in the state polls) was the understanding in our PKR meeting. I’m not sure (about) the PH presidential council’s meeting.”
Amirudin, who is Selangor PH chairman and also PKR vice-president, said this when questioned by reporters on whether voters can expect to see any collaborations with Muda, led by Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, in the state elections.
The polls are widely expected to be in August, following the Selangor sultan’s consent to the dissolution of the state legislative assembly on June 23, earlier this morning.
Amirudin also said that unfinalised seat negotiations will be brought to the attention of PH chairman, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Barisan Nasional (BN) linchpin Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also deputy prime minister.
“(Seat allocation) discussions between BN and PH have completed, there are just some unfinalised seats in Selangor and the five other states set to have their election.
“The number (of unfinalised seats) is very small compared to the seats that we intend to contest for,” he added.
Should there be any room for Muda to contest in Selangor under PH, it could only be in the last two out of 56 state seats that Amirudin yesterday said were the only ones left undecided. Otherwise, he said 95% of seat allocation talks between PH and BN had already been completed.
Selangor is among three states under PH which will hold state elections this year, with the other two being Penang and Negri Sembilan, which have announced that they will dissolve their state assemblies on June 28 and 30 respectively. Apart from this, three states ruled by Perikatan Nasional will also hold state polls this year, namely Kelantan, which will dissolve its state assembly on June 22, and Kedah, on June 28, while Terengganu has yet to announce its dissolution date. – The Vibes, June 19, 2023
