KUALA LUMPUR – The simultaneous elections in six states next week will see 245 seats up for grabs, with plenty of multi-cornered fights expected.
Yet, only 71 women will be contesting in the polls to be held on August 12, with one being the youngest candidate in the race this time.
23-year-old Melanie Ting is contesting in Bukit Antarabangsa under Muda.
In Bandar Utama, Muda is resting its hopes on the shoulders of Abe Lim, an environmentalist whose father runs a petrochemical business.
A lawyer by profession, Lim is also turning heads for a more “interesting” reason: her resemblance to radio deejay and artist Gan Mei Yan.
In response, Lim shared screenshots of those comparing her to Gan, tagging the deejay and raising a toast to her, saying “yumcha”.
Fanfare aside, Lim is taking her candidacy seriously, fully utilising the power of social media and going down to the ground to meet the people of Bandar Utama.
She also attempted a walk along the pedestrian path in Bandar Utama, sharing a video to illustrate how she did not feel safe doing so.
The battle for Bandar Utama will not be an easy one for the 27-year-old as she is set to face the state constituency’s darling, incumbent Jamaliah Jamaluddin of DAP.
Her other opponent is Gerakan’s Aliff Taufid, who is hoping to win the seat for the Perikatan Nasional coalition.
Safe to say, Lim’s toughest and most obvious opponent is Jamaliah, who has been serving the community since winning the seat in 2018 with a 34,769-vote majority.
