KOTA KINABALU – Sabah has extended a courteous but stern reminder to travellers exploring the state to be respectful of the local customs after images of a woman seen walking in a bikini at a popular tourist area in the city centre here had gone viral.
Netizens have also expressed outrage at another woman who is seen in photos apparently lifting her garment in public places at night.
Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew issued the advisory when reflecting the viral images of a woman believed to be a foreigner in a bikini, strolling along Gaya Street with her luggage.
Liew noted the incident could have happened approximately one month ago.
"Through the Sabah Tourism Board (STB), we frequently remind travellers about the appropriate dress codes and local customs in Sabah. However, it is advisable for travellers to conduct some research about their destination if they are uncertain. It is crucial to respect and embrace the local culture," she said in a statement here.
Despite Kota Kinabalu's proximity to beautiful offshore islands such as the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, Sepanggar Island, and Tanjung Aru Beach, the city centre maintains a distinct atmosphere where locals do not dress in beach attire, she added.
Liew expressed her disappointment of another viral incident involving the images of a half-naked woman said to have been taken in front of the Sabah Tourism Board office in town.
She also described these images as “seemingly malicious intent.”
"We are currently investigating the authenticity of the account and image. Nevertheless, we urge the public to cooperate by reporting any such content they come across on social media platforms," she said.
Meanwhile, the police are seeking the public’s help to identify the individuals said to have engaged indecent behaviour at a public place.
Kota Kinabalu police chief Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said the police have been alerted to the circulation of four images depicting a woman engaging in such act at Gaya Street.
“Two of these pictures, taken at night, showed a woman displaying inappropriate conduct, such as exposing her breasts and buttocks.
Meanwhile, the other two images, captured during the daytime, revealed a woman wearing minimal clothing in an open area around Gaya Street, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah,” he said in a statement.
Zaidi said the case is being investigated under Section 294 (a) of the Penal Code, as well as Section 233 of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission Act (SKMM).
