SHAH ALAM – Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad surprised participants and observers at the PAS muktamar (gathering) held here today when he showed up as a guest, eliciting excited shouts of "takbir" (praise the Almighty) from the delegates.
The 97-year-old's arrival was announced by PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan. "Welcome Tun Mahathir to the PAS muktamar," he said in the midst of delivering his speech.
Dr Mahathir was then ushered to be seated on the stage with the main PAS leaders, including present Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang.
Also present at the event which is ongoing till evening is the Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and other leaders of the coalition.
Dr Mahathir and Muhyiddin were co-founders of Bersatu in 2016. Dr Mahathir was chairman and Muhyiddin was president, a post he still occupies.
The former however quit the party in 2020.
It has been reported that Dr Mahathir had appeared on the stage during a PAS event last July was during the party's rally for the state election campaign in Kelantan. – The Vibes, October 20, 2023
