KUALA LUMPUR – The incident at Megah Rise Mall in Petaling Jaya which saw a section of the ceiling collapsing was caused during a period of strong winds and heavy rainfall, the company in charge of the property said.

In a statement last night, PPB Properties said that a comprehensive structural assessment and implementation of necessary repairs and reinforcements are being carried out.

The company expressed its deep regret over the incident that took place at about 3pm yesterday.

It said that the ceiling of the car porch near the main entrance collapsed, resulting in minor injuries to three individuals. All three individuals have received the necessary medical attention.

“Our thoughts are with those affected by today’s incident. We are fully cooperating with all relevant authorities to manage the situation as swiftly as possible,” said Low Eng Hooi, CEO of PPB Properties.

“The safety and well-being of our customers, tenants and staff are always our top priority, and immediate measures were taken to ensure the safety of everyone present during the incident. The affected area was promptly evacuated, and debris has been cleared.”

“We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused and appreciate your understanding and cooperation,” he said.

The affected areas, which include the main entrance, adjacent pet-friendly lifts, and Kheng Wah Kopitiam, are closed until further notice.

Nevertheless, the rest of the mall continues to operate as usual.

“A team of consultants have been engaged to conduct a comprehensive structural assessment and implement necessary repairs and reinforcements,” it said.

“Public safety is our priority. We are committed to implementing rigorous safety measures to protect our community and prevent similar incidents in the future,” added Low.

The mixed development project, including Megah Rise Residensi, a 39-storey luxury condominium, was launched by PPB Properties back in December 2022.

Earlier, a video clip went viral on social media showing the anxious moments of some visitors and security guards when a section of the ceiling was collapsing.

The 37-second video clip also shows the quick actions of security guards in directing visitors to a safer location. – The Vibes, October 29, 2023
