A DISTURBING viral video circulating on social media, showing a Malaysian teacher berating and recording a student in tears at a school canteen, has triggered widespread concern about teacher professionalism and student safety.

The footage, lasting two minutes and 32 seconds, is believed to have been recorded on 14 April.

In the clip, the pupil is seen weeping uncontrollably while attempting to explain themselves to the visibly angry teacher, whose actions have been roundly condemned by the public and education stakeholders alike.

The incident has drawn a strong response from the Minister of Education, Fadhlina Sidek, who issued a stern reminder to all teachers to uphold integrity and adhere to the ethical standards set forth under the ‘Standard Guru Malaysia (SGM) 2.0’ in fulfilling their duties.

"We are currently conducting an investigation into the matter," Fadhlina said. "I take full responsibility in ensuring this issue is addressed thoroughly so that we may continue to reinforce the importance of teacher ethics and integrity from time to time."

The conduct displayed in the video, she noted, runs counter to the values and disciplinary management guidelines established by the Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM).

"In educating and shaping student character, a compassionate and respectful approach must take precedence," she added.

Many have expressed concern that such aggressive behaviour, especially when recorded and made public, could cause lasting trauma to students and foster an unsafe learning environment.

Nevertheless, the episode has served as a sobering lesson on the critical need to safeguard both the ethical standing of the teaching profession and the rights and welfare of students.

As public sentiment suggests, education extends beyond mere dissemination of knowledge. It also encompasses the cultivation of character and respect for others—especially those entrusted to our care.

"If teachers themselves fail to model exemplary behaviour in nurturing student character, to whom else can we entrust this vital responsibility, if not the parents?" one observer commented. - May 27, 2025
