MALAYSIA must urgently develop a nationwide earthquake early warning system using mobile alerts and sirens to ensure the public receives timely and accurate information to respond effectively in the event of tremors, says Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
The Chairman of the Alliance for Safe Community said such a system is a crucial step in managing seismic risks and preventing panic, particularly among communities living in vulnerable areas.
“Malaysia may not sit on the Pacific Ring of Fire, but the recent minor earthquakes in Johor and tremors felt in several states show that our country is not entirely free from seismic threats,” he said in a statement to *Sinar Harian*.
“Although tremors in Malaysia are typically minor, they remain unpredictable and could cause damage or alarm if the population is unprepared.”
His comments follow recent reports of six minor earthquakes recorded in Segamat, Johor, between 24 and 30 August, with magnitudes ranging from 2.5 to 4.1.
Lam Thye stressed that other mitigation measures must also be prioritised, including updated mapping of all fault lines across the country and the deployment of modern seismic monitoring technology to detect risks earlier.
He added that the enforcement of earthquake-resistant building codes, along with structural strengthening of schools, hospitals, and public infrastructure, should be treated as national priorities.
“Earthquakes cannot be avoided, but we can reduce the risks and their impact,” he said. “Through vigilance, early warning systems, and stronger infrastructure, Malaysia can ensure its people are informed, safe, and prepared to face any natural disaster.” - Sept 7, 2025
