IT has finally happened – Datuk Seri Najib Razak is behind bars in Kajang Prison, beginning his 12-year prison sentence on Tuesday (August 23) after failing in his final bid at the apex court to overturn a High Court guilty verdict in his SRC International Sdn Bhd case.
Najib was sentenced to prison and a fine of RM210 million after he was convicted on seven charges brought against him for abuse of power, money laundering and criminal breach of trust over SRC International funds amounting to RM42 million.
While no one (arguably) was surprised at the outcome of this case, we were surprised at the swiftness with which it came about on that rainy Tuesday afternoon.
The Vibes’ seasoned newsmen discuss the full implications of this development and what it means for Umno and the next general election.
Has Umno, in fact, already moved on?
Is Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri the winner in this situation? Should he ride on the ‘feel good factor’ Najib’s fate has afforded him and call for an early GE15?
Is a royal pardon 3 years in the making?
And despite the jubilation of most – was this not an unfortunate day for Malaysia, that we have jailed a former prime minister, a man who had such promising beginnings?
According to our panellists, he had the makings of what could have been a great leader – his moderation, policies, and vision were in line with the aspirations of making the country a force to be reckoned with on the global scale.
So where and when did it go wrong for Najib? The Good, the Bad and the Ugly candidly explores it all. – The Vibes, August 27, 2022
