THERE are about 3,500 Afghan refugees stranded in Malaysia as we write this. Stranded is the operative word – although they all possess UNHCR cards that allow them to stay here, they are limited to just that.

These refugees are not allowed to leave the country, work, or even access education or healthcare. And this is for a people who had to leave their country with just the clothes on their backs.

On this week’s episode of Artizens, host Manvir Victor speaks exclusively to the Rotary Club of Bukit Kiara Sunrise which decided to step in and help these refugees.

Their president, Carmen Lee, along with past president Dr Yee YL, music director JJ Lee of Camerata, and theatre director Saleh Sepas of Parastoo Theatre explain what is in store for guests who come to ‘A Voice for Afghan Refugees’.

The musical play will be staged on May 6 at the Help Auditorium in Subang from 6.45pm. It is available to those who donate RM120 and RM200 to watch the evening's performance.

Saleh explains how he managed to set up the Parastoo theatre despite facing tremendous difficulty. He also talks about how hope has been a main driver for the Afghans in Malaysia and why the money raised from this show is so important for them.
