CAPE Verde held Uruguay to a 2-2 draw at the World Cup, securing their second famous result at the tournament in the space of a week.

Even though Uruguay controlled most of the first half, it was Cape Verde that struck first. In the 21st minute, Kevin Pina smashed a free kick past the Uruguayan wall, past the fingertips of keeper Fernando Muslera and into the back of the net.

After Uruguay responded with two goals from Maxi Araujo and Agustin Canobbio, the African side then got their second as Helio Varela capitalised on some disastrous defending.

With the game holding at a 2-2 draw, the Uruguayans continued to put pressure on the attack, taking 17 total shots and getting three times as many touches in the box as their opponent.

The result leaves both nations on two points heading into the final round of matches in Group H. – June 22, 2026
