Hi everyone, just want to let you know that I started running, and I mean serious running, and not the kind that’s done for Instagram photos.
The first day was terrible: I felt like my heart was going to pop out after running a 500-metre stretch. The second day was a little better, but my heart felt like it still wanted to burst out from my chest.
It made me wonder why though? I thought I was fit since I’m always flowing on my mat. Anyway, I started running because I felt my singing had deteriorated since my breaths weren’t as seamless as it used to be.
When my throat started to get croaky while singing or conducting classes, I thought that I needed to improve my cardio to alleviate the problem so I sought help from my brother, Shah, who is an avid runner.
He asked me to try sprinting; I swear it’s a ploy to kill me so that he can have my mother all to himself.
In the hope of incorporating more cardio work into my yoga practice, I started conducting more power flow classes last week. As a result, I felt a difference in my singing and I think my rendition sounded better when I did Celine Dion’s Power of Love.
Compared to the yoga flow that I normally do, where I focus on connecting the breath with movements and asanas (poses), cardio yoga gives me more control of the breaths and helps regulate my heart rate with more dynamic movements.
Basically, cardio yoga is yoga movements performed continuously at a quicker pace to engage muscles and regulate your cardiovascular system.
Since I’m aware that running will cause me to lose weight, I’ve limited my runs and started doing more cardio yoga to gain a few pounds, which is a real struggle for me.
As I’ll be sharing my favourite cardio flow today, which takes less than 10 minutes, let’s all stop, drop and yoga right away! ─ The Vibes, 17 February, 2021
