JOHOR BAHRU − The broadcast rights of the Malaysia League (M-League) can be improved to provide profits to every team, thereby boosting the quality of local football.
Communications and Multimedia Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa was of the opinion that broadcast rights should not only focus on live telecasts because various content can be created under the M-League.
“If we consider the EPL (English Premier League), they can segmentise even more, including pre-match, post-match, live, delayed telecast or highlights or key moments. Then all television channels should be given the opportunity to be broadcasters.
“So now, we see indications that we’re moving towards this direction because we know we have six matches in a week, sometimes we only live telecast one or two matches, the rest are left out, that’s a loss,” he said during an interview on the Santai Bola Sepak Tempatan programme on Bernama TV here today.
He said the measure would enable local football fans to see the M-League from various perspectives.
Annuar, who is also Kuala Lumpur (KL) City FC president said Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) had the advantage in winning tonight’s Charity Shield match as they had a strong team and want to make up for their loss to the City Boys in the 2021 Malaysia Cup last December.
“Technically, JDT is an all-round team, strong in every position with local and import players, who are a level above most other teams,” he said.
KL City FC, however, was strong in defence and could create opportunities if their opponents slip up in their hunt to score, he added.
Annuar personally felt that the Charity Shield could be turned into a community-centric sporting event.
“For instance, the proceeds of the match and sponsorship for this year’s match is dedicated to frontliners and victims of the floods, so in this way, football is close to the community,” he said.
Annuar also mentioned that time constraints were behind his decision to resign as KL City FC president although he had a deep passion for football. – Bernama, February 26, 2022
