KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s top men’s singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia enters the quarterfinals of the Badminton Asia Championships (BAC) after defeating 23rd-seed Shesar Hiren Rhustavito of Indonesia 21-14, 22-20 at the Muntinlupa Sports Complex in Manila, the Philippines, today.

As part of his preparations for the upcoming Thomas Cup, Zii Jia will face Japanese world number 14 Kanta Tsuneyama tomorrow in the quarterfinals.

National men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik also entered the quarterfinals after defeating Singapore’s Danny Bawa Chrisnanta-Andy Kwek 21-16, 21-19.

Meanwhile, Swiss Open champions Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin also made their way into the quarterfinals along with Man Wei Chong-Kai Vun Tee, mixed doubles pair Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing and women’s doubles duo Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah. 

Unfortunately, mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Peck Yen Wei, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, singles shuttler S. Kisona, women’s doubles pair Anna Cheong-Teoh Mei Xing, veteran Liew Daren and men’s doubles duo Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi ended their campaign in the Philippines after getting knocked out in the round of 16.

Following the close of BAC on May 1, the Malaysian badminton squad will make their way to Bangkok for the prestigious Thomas and Uber Cup tournaments from May 8-15. – The Vibes, April 28, 2022
