KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian contingent has reached their gold medal target at the Hanoi SEA Games today through the national karate team.
R. Sharmendran, S. Prem Kumar, H. Sureeya Sankar, S. Geerijaieswaran, Arif Afifuddin Ab Malik, V. Kueggan and G. Katish delivered Malaysia’s 36th gold medal after defeating Indonesia 3-0 in the men’s team Kumite final at Ninh Binh Sports Gymnasium.
Speaking to The Vibes, chef de mission Datuk Nur Azmi Ahmad said they will not stop at 36, but instead will strive to continue their fight to achieve more medals and make Malaysia proud.
“I’m happy and grateful for what we have achieved today.
“I would also like to thank everyone for their hard work, including all sports federations, presidents, managers, athletes, and all the supporting staff,” he said.
Azmi, who is also the Malaysian Karate Federation (Makaf) secretary-general, is especially grateful to the karate team for bringing home the desired 36th gold medal.
The win was also Malaysia’s first men’s team title since the 1993 edition that was held in Singapore.
With only a few days left till the games conclude on Monday, Azmi is hoping that the contingent could attain 6 more gold medals from other sports.
