KUALA LUMPUR – The third season of FIM MiniGP Malaysia Series kicks off this weekend at the Sepang International Kart Circuit.

As part of MotoGP organiser Dorna Sports’ Road to MotoGP programme, a total of 15 riders and one reserve rider aged 10 to 14 will be racing for the championship.

At the launch of the third season today, Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM) secretary-general Muizz Azli said this season of the MiniGP is different as several races will take place outside of Selangor.

After this weekend’s first round in Sepang, the riders will be heading to Perlis, then Kedah, followed by Johor, and ending the season back at the Sepang International Kart Circuit.

“As with the previous season, the top two riders will book their spot in the FIM MiniGP World Series Valencia, Spain in conjunction with the final race of the MotoGP in Valencia, Spain.

“MAM would like to thank the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) and Sepang International Circuit (SIC) for their continuous support for the FIM MiniGP,” he said.

Meanwhile, SIC chief executive officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif said there are several new improvements made to further enhance the development of two-wheeled racing in the country.

This year will see the introduction of a supporting race category called the SIC Ohvale Junior Championship where the riders will be aged eight to 11.

“We are also very proud to have the first female junior rider, Fatihah Balqis in the SIC Ohvale Junior Championship 110cc,” he said.

During the 2020 season, Hakim Danish won the championship and later made strides internationally, racing in the Asia Talent Cup and the European Talent Cup, and managed to step on the podium several times. – The Vibes, June 2, 2022.
