KUALA LUMPUR – National badminton ace Lee Zii Jia lost to Indonesia’s favourite Anthony Sinisuka Ginting in rubber sets in the Indonesia Masters at the Istora Senayan today.

Fresh from his Thailand Open and Badminton Asia Championships win, Zii Jia gave a good start to go up 5-2 within four minutes in the first set but the resilient Ginting fought back to close the gap to 6-6.

However, the world number five managed to stop Ginting’s comeback as he went on to take the set 21-18.

In the second and third sets, Ginting stepped up his game to bring down the Kedah-born shuttler 16-21, 15-21.

Meanwhile, men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik also exited the quarterfinals in their match against China’s Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang 16-21, 21-13, 21-17.

Their fellow teammates Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani also suffered an exit in the hands of world number one pair Indonesians Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo in three games, 10-21, 21-11, 21-18.

Earlier, world number 10 women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah continued their impressive run in the Indonesia Masters after defeating Thailand’s Jongkolphan Kititharakul-Rawinda Prajongjai in straight sets.

The Malaysian pair had a great start in the first set as they were in full control of the game before easily winning it 21-11.

However, in the second set, it was neck-to-neck between both pairs as the Thai pair pushed Pearly and Thinaah to their limits, but it was not enough as the Malaysians were well composed to take the set 21- 16 and book their spot in the semifinals.

They will face Indonesians Apriyani Rahayu and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti tomorrow for the semifinals. – The Vibes, June 10, 2022
