KUALA LUMPUR – National women’s singles shuttler Goh Jin Wei is looking forward to her first time representing Malaysia at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

Speaking at the Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) today, the 22-year-old said her preparation for the games has been going according to plan.

“I didn’t expect to be called up, but nevertheless I want to thank the National Sports Council (MSN), National Sports Institute (ISN), and Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) for the trust they have in me,” she said.

Jin Wei shared her surprise to be included in the list of representatives as there are other players ranked higher than her, such as S. Kisona (54) and Soniia Cheah (38).

“I was shocked, but I did not want to think too much of it. My priority now is to do the best preparations and hope the efforts will help me to contribute for Malaysia,” said world number 68.

She just returned from Europe, and with Birmingham a month away, she intends to use the time to recover and improve her game.

She recently played at the Denmark Masters and the Nantes International Challenge in France. She exited both tournaments in the round of 32.

She finished third at the Italian International in Milan after retiring in the semi-finals against Taipei’s Hsu Wen Chi.

“We still have a month to get ready. I might play in Taipei as part of my preparation for the Commonwealth Games.”

The Taipei Open is scheduled to take place from July 19 to 24, while the Commonwealth Games begins on July 28 to August 8.

Jin Wei added that besides the physical training, she has been feeling the fighting spirit.

“I want to be able to do the best I can, and I will fight all out for the highest target.

“Even if I play against world champions, I will keep on fighting and not give up,” she added. – The Vibes, June 23, 2022
