KUALA LUMPUR – National badminton legend Datuk Lee Chong Wei has been appointed to the National Sports Council (NSC) board of managers for the 23rd term.

Joining Chong Wei on the NSC board of managers will be former swimming queen Nurul Huda Abdullah.

Speaking to The Vibes, Chong Wei said he is happy to be part of the NSC board.

“I would like to thank the sports minister for giving me the opportunity to contribute to Malaysian sports. This will be my first job after retiring from badminton.

However, Chong Wei said that since he was a former athlete himself, it would be easier for him to help the athletes with their concerns and problems.

Chong Wei added that at first, he was sceptical over the offer to be on the committee, citing his busy schedule, but he realised this was his chance to give back to the sports industry.

“I will not give up on this golden opportunity,” he added.

Last week, Chong told the media that he was not ready to take up a coaching role yet, but said he was open to the opportunity when the time is right and said that the Badminton Association of Malaysia currently has more than capable coaches in charge.

Meanwhile, Malaysia is still waiting for the elusive Olympic gold medal and the Sports Ministry has formed a special committee to oversee the goal for 2024 Paris.

The 2024 Paris Gold Programme Monitoring Committee will be headed by Olympic Council of Malaysia president Tan Sri Mohammad Norza Zakaria.

This was announced by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu during the NSC board meeting today.

The committee, which has eight members including Chong Wei, is responsible for providing insights that improve the programme and identifying issues to be brought to its attention.

At the same time, Faizal also congratulated Chong Wei for his appointment as the newest member of the NSC board of managers. – The Vibes, July 7, 2022
