KUALA LUMPUR – After teasing that the redeveloped Shah Alam Stadium will be comparable to Anfield, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari clarified that RM787 million is the cost to refurbish the facility, not building a new one.
He said in a statement that the total cost of RM787 million includes fixing and upgrading the stadium, along with the Malawati Indoor Stadium.
He reiterated that the redevelopment will not involve state funds.

“Many assume that RM787 million is the cost for a new stadium. This is not true.
“Some even questioned why the cost to fix up the current stadium is high,” he said in a statement posted on social media.
Amirudin added that the expensive cost involves lifting the stadium platform by 1.5m to avoid floodings such as those that happened in 2006, 2015, and 2021.
Along with replacing the entire wiring system and the damaged roof panels of the current stadium, the cost also includes repairing the Malawati Indoor Stadium next to the main structure.
“From 2013 to 2022, the state government spent RM56 million to fix and restore the Shah Alam Stadium.
“The cost keeps getting higher and now it will cost RM787 million to bring it back to its former glory.”
He said since reviewing all the options since 2013, the state has decided to redevelop the stadium.
Amirudin also noted that it will not involve state funds, although there is no final valuation on the redevelopment.
“The valuation of the project has not been finalised yet.
“A public exhibition will be conducted by September to display the relevant information and details of the project,” he commented.
Last week, the Selangor state government handed a letter of intent (LOI) to developer Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) to give a detailed proposal on redevelopment plans of the Shah Alam Stadium.
Meanwhile, at the ceremony, Selangor FC CEO Johan Kamal said the project is something for everyone in Selangor to get behind, regardless if the stadium is fixed or redeveloped. – The Vibes, July 18, 2022.
