KUALA LUMPUR – With the right approach, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu believes national youth sprinter Muhammad Azeem Mohd Fahmi can reach even greater heights.
In a statement, Faizal said the 18-year-old can accomplish more in the future if his skills are refined.
“I believe that Azeem’s talents and abilities need to be continuously polished for him to create more success in the future.
“The Youth and Sports Ministry will strive to support any efforts to improve the achievements of athletes in all disciplines for the sake of national sports’ progress,” he said.
Azeem broke the national 100m record yesterday at the U-20 World Athletics Championships in Cali, Colombia.
He ran the 100m in 10.09 seconds in the eighth heat, breaking the previous national 100m record of 10.18 seconds, set by Khairul Hafiz Jantan in 2016.
Faizal also congratulated Azeem on finishing fifth in the 100m final that took place earlier today.
“It is indeed an exciting achievement for all Malaysians who have always supported Azeem’s journey as a young national athlete.”
Meanwhile, Faizal announced that his ministry is considering upgrading the running track at SMK Gunung Rapat, Ipoh.
“This is to produce more talented athletes with great potential in athletics.”
SMK Gunung Rapat is a sports cluster school that has produced many athletes, including Azeem.
After Azeem’s record-breaking run yesterday, Malaysia’s athletics head coach, Mohd Manshahar Abdul Jalil said the youngster has yet to reach his peak and should be given space to progress. – The Vibes, August 3, 2022
