BWF World C’ships: Aaron-Wooi Yik are world champions

KUALA LUMPUR – National men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik did Malaysia proud today as they became the first in the country to win gold at the World Championships in Tokyo.

In a stunning upset, the world No. 6 pair was up against third-ranked Muhammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia and took the match in 40 minutes to win 21-19, 21-14.

“Aaron and I have partnered for about four years and this is really a good boost and start for us. 

“Finally, we got it. It’s been our dream to be the world champion,” said Wooi Yik. 

Aaron, meanwhile, added that they wish to “keep the momentum going and fight for more titles in the future”. 

“We are very happy to make ourselves and our country proud because we are the first world champion. 

“Thank you for all the support and keep on supporting us. Yes, we did it!” 

Aaron-Wooi Yik had never gone past the quarterfinals at the World Championships since their debut in the 2018 edition in Nanjing, China. 

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics bronze medallists were also the first Malaysian pair to enter the final in 12 years after Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong did it in the 2010 edition in Paris. 

In the women’s doubles, top seeds Chen Qing Chen-Jia Yi Fan of China defended their title after defeating Kim So Yeong-Kong Hee Yong of South Korea, 22-20 21-14 in 62 minutes.
