PUTRAJAYA – The Federal Territories (FT) contingent are targeting to wrest the overall champions’ title from Terengganu at the 20th Malaysia Games (Sukma), which will be held around the Klang Valley from September 16 to 24.

The target was announced by FT Minister Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, who also said that the contingent would field 603 athletes, comprising 351 men and 252 women.

He said the contingent would also take part in all 31 sports to be contested, except for the two demonstration sports – silambam and kabbadi.

“We are 90% ready, each sport is undergoing the last phase of training and on September 6 we will hold the flag handing-over ceremony for the FT contingent to the 20th Sukma.

“We have set the target, we want to be the overall Sukma champions this time and, like I said, it is important for this Sukma to be held because the teams have trained and to let them find new back-up athletes,” he said.

He said this at the media conference of the presentation of administrative assistance to sports associations in the FT of Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur 2022 at the Federal Territories Ministry here today.

At the 19th edition of the Sukma in Perak in 2018, FT finished second overall with 52 golds, 38 silvers and 49 bronzes while Terengganu emerged champions with a haul of 56-51-53.

In the 20th edition this time, a total of 426 gold medals will be up for grabs, with 223 in the men’s events, 184 in women’s events and 19 in mixed events.

Most of the venues for the 20th edition will be located in four zones around the Klang Valley – namely Kuala Lumpur, Bangi (including Nilai and Putrajaya), Bukit Jalil and Shah Alam – while only sailing will be held at the National Sailing Training Centre in Langkawi. – Bernama, August 30, 2022
