KUALA LUMPUR – National swimmer Bryan Leong won his second and third gold medal at the 20th Malaysian Games (Sukma) at the National Aquatic Centre, Bukit Jalil today.
The Kuala Lumpur swimmer clocked 29.02s to bag the 50m breaststroke gold medal, edging out Sarawak’s Ryan Yii (29.08s) and Selangor’s Andrew Goh (29.39s).
It was an unexpected outcome for Bryan as he claimed that breaststroke was not one of his best disciplines.
Bryan who participated in this year’s Commonwealth Games also assisted the Kuala Lumpur contingent to clinch a gold medal in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay earlier today, clocking 3m 25.78s, with teammates Khiew Hoe Yean, Low Ken Ji, and Tan Khai Xin.
They beat Selangor (3m 28.58s) and Penang (3m 31.77s) who won the silver and bronze respectively.
Bryan, who is currently in his third year of his degree course in neuroscience at King’s College in London, said that he aims to qualify for next year’s world championships after missing out the last edition in June this year.
“I am also looking forward to the 2023 SEA Games but hopefully it does not clash with any of my classes or exams.”
Yesterday, the 19-year-old also claimed gold in the men’s 50m butterfly and silver in the 100m freestyle.
Meanwhile, Melaka’s Low Zheng Yong bounced back to claim the gold in the men’s 200m butterfly, clocking at 2m 3.25s ahead of Kuala Lumpur’s Tan Khai Xin (2m 4.12s) and teammate Sebastian Soon (2m 5.57s) who came in second and third place.
Yesterday, Zheng Yong finished third in the men’s 200m freestyle, which was won by Selangor’s Terence Ng. – The Vibes, September 21, 2022
