LANGKAWI – Terengganu Polygon Cycling Team (TSG) Nur Aiman Zariff adds another national record to his name after successfully winning the King of Mountain (KoM) title for the second time at the 2022 Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL), as the tour wrapped today.
Previously, he became the first Malaysian to win the LTdL red jersey in 2020 when he was riding for Team Sapura Cycling.
Aiman, who collected 29 points in this edition, was delighted that he was able to retain his red jersey title for the second time in a row.
“I am very grateful for this achievement. I had to go through many obstacles since I took charge of the red jersey in Stage 2 of the tour. It is amazing that I managed to survive all this while.
“Today’s race was intense and fast from the get-go. So, I was very careful so that the riders who were a few points behind me would not be able to catch up.
“This is a history in the making for Malaysian riders,” said the 25-year-old.
Teammate Jambaljamts Sainbayar was also tied with the same points, but Aiman was first to reach more Category 2 climbs.
However, Sainbayar was triumphant in the Asian classification (white jersey) as he had one second advantage over Astana-Qazaqstan’s Andrew Zeits.
Meanwhile, Movistar’s Ivan Sosa won the overall general classification to claim the most coveted yellow jersey with a combined time of 25h 54s throughout the eight stages of the LTdL.
Burgos-BH’s Alex Molenaar became the Stage 8 winner, covering the distance of 115.9km in the Langkawi island loop that started and ended in Kuah.
Alpecin-Deceuninck’s Jason Osborne finished second, while UAE Team Emirates’s Juan Sebastian Molano came in third.
Erlend Blikra of Uno-X Pro Cycling, who was the Stage 6 winner, claimed the sprinters’ classification (green jersey), amassing 49 points. – The Vibes, October 18, 2022
