KUALA LUMPUR – Egypt beat South Africa to finish fifth in the 29th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh today.
Egypt’s 2-1 win is their second victory in the tournament having previously beaten South Africa 3-0 in a round robin match.
Both teams were mostly made up of young players with little experience, as they view the tournament as a chance to season their youngsters.
Connor Beauchamp scored with South Africa's first penalty corner in the sixth minute to give them the lead.
However, Egypt responded in the 29th minute when Adel Ziad Baioumy Ibrahim scored from a penalty corner.
Egypt’s Ragab Ismail Abdalla Hossameldin scored a field goal in the 44th minute, just as the match appeared to be heading for a tie.
In the last quarter, South Africa tried hard to get back into the game, but Egypt, coached by Pakistan’s Zaman Tahir, held on to the slim lead. – The Vibes, November 9, 2022
