MELAKA – A blueprint is needed to solve problems faced by Malaysian football clubs, especially involving player salary arrears, said Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli Abd Halim.

He said the cause of these problems, which often plague local clubs’ management and sponsorship, must be identified.

“There may be a method to find a better solution for all parties facing financial problems, particularly in resolving their player salary arrears,” he told reporters after officiating at the Melaka Open Speed Skating Challenge 2022 at the Tun Fatimah Stadium here today.

He said this while commenting on the issue of player salary arrears that has plagued Melaka United FC as reported by the media recently.

He said the Youth and Sports Ministry is aware of Melaka United FC’s problems, but there have been no detailed discussions so far with the club’s management (on the matter).

“We will evaluate this matter. At the same time we will try to understand the problems they face by holding meetings and discussions with the team’s management,” he said.

Aside from Melaka United FC, he said several other football clubs are also struggling with a similar dilemma and the ministry will work together with them to find solutions.

“However, the ministry does not have absolute authority to direct or set any provisions and lay down a timeline to resolve it since club management is private or under the state government.

“This matter has to be thoroughly evaluated but we believe there is an ideal solution for every team including Melaka United FC and we need to ensure that the issue of salary arrears does not recur,” he said.

He also dismissed high salaries as the cause of clubs’ management being overburdened because each player’s salary scale is given based on their performance and each club’s capability is different.

Previously, the media reported that the Mousedeers were facing a salary arrear crisis, which is still ongoing today. – Bernama, December 17, 2022
