KUALA LUMPUR – Mixed doubles player Yap Cheng Wen has resigned from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) due to a shoulder injury.
BAM doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky confirmed this, saying that the 27-year-old had considered the decision since the beginning of 2022.
“Cheng Wen had told me that this would be her last year with BAM because when she did a MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), the doctors found a tear on her left shoulder.
“She had already planned to leave the team since early this year, but continued to stay until December.
“If it were up to her, she would continue, but she has not been feeling comfortable even during the Malaysian International Challenge last month,” Rexy said when met at Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) here today.
Cheng Wen announced her retirement on her Instagram profile two days ago, saying that she decided to take her career in a “different direction”.
“I have been at BAM for 15 years since I was 13 years old. It was not an easy decision.
“I would like to thank BAM for giving me guidance, support, and opportunities, and I thank all the coaches who have guided me – ISN, BAM staff, my partner, and all my teammates for the support,” posted the 2018 Macau Open champion.
Meanwhile, mixed doubles coach Teo Kok Siang also parted ways with BAM when he announced his departure on his social media account, also two days ago.
However, Rexy said the 32-year-old’s decision would not disturb the coaching structure in the mixed doubles department as it is currently in the good hands of recently appointed mixed doubles coach Nova Widianto.
