KUALA LUMPUR – Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh today urged all Malaysians who are actively playing or have played any esports game in the past to participate in an online survey on Malaysia’s esports ecosystem.

“The aim of the survey is to gather important information on the demographics and psychographics of Malaysian esports enthusiasts and their financial impact,“ said Hannah.

The Youth and Sports Ministry, through the Esports Integrated initiative and its research agency, the Institute of Youth Research Malaysia, recently launched a nationwide online survey on the Malaysian esports ecosystem, which will run from the end of December 2022 until February 2023.

According to the Segambut MP, the ministry will use the research internally for its future esports-related policies and strategies, with the intent to syndicate it externally to all relevant local and international esports stakeholders.

“The questionnaire is divided into three main categories, including general knowledge, perception, and ecosystem.

“The online survey will be followed up by the formation of a technical working group comprising local esports experts and stakeholders in March 2023, for the purpose of focus group discussions to understand the ecosystem on a deeper and technical level,” said Hannah.

She said an extensive study of the local esports ecosystem is essential to not just gather insights but also gain critical information to ensure that all decisions are data-driven.

“As Malaysian players continue to push the limits and achieve success at regional and international levels, it is important for us to look inward and quantify the potential growth of the Malaysian market, and its subsequent future impact on the economy and the development of youth and sports in Malaysia,” she said.

This online survey is open to all Malaysians who are interested in esports or have played any esports title. – The Vibes, January 3, 2023
