KUALA LUMPUR – Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh has assured that shuttlers from China are not affected by any travelling restrictions to participate in the Malaysia Open scheduled on January 10-15.
This follows rumours last week that the Health Ministry would announce Covid-19 restrictions on inbound travellers from China.
“So far no (shuttlers from China) are stopped from coming in, and we have also not heard from the China Badminton Association.
“Whatever it is, we will follow the decision made by the Health Ministry on their regulations.
“Plus, they would not necessarily be coming in from China, because they will most likely be flying in from other countries, depending on the country of the tournament they come from,” he said.
Kenny confirmed that several foreign players from Denmark and France have arrived in Malaysia to start their pre-Malaysian Open training at Akademi Badminton Malaysia and several local badminton clubs.
“We have not come across any issues (with travelling restrictions), but we will cross that bridge when we get there,” Kenny added.
Meanwhile, Kenny said preparations for the Super 1000 event are going smoothly.
“We started preparing on Monday, which is the second day of the new year. We are happy that the preparations are on schedule.
“We are trying to get it done by Sunday because the tournament referee will be coming to inspect the venue.”
Kenny also noted that 70% of the total tickets are sold out. – The Vibes, January 7, 2023
