KUALA LUMPUR – The Youth and Sports Ministry intends to continue organising “big screen” programmes in the future to give home fans additional access to live sports events, said Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh.
Hannah said the screenings held in conjunction with the 2022 Asean Football Federation Cup semi-final fixtures involving Malaysia and Thailand recently received positive responses.
According to her, the programme on January 7 for the Malaysia-Thailand match was attended by 62,800 spectators at 17 screening locations, while 87,710 people watched the second leg live on January 10 at 43 locations, including 18 public universities.
“The Ministry organised the programme (on January 7) after 21,000 seats at Bukit Jalil National Stadium were rendered unusable due to a booking issue between the football match and the Jay Chou concert.
“Both these events involved large legions of fans and the interests of both parties needed to be taken care of,” she said in a statement today.
Hannah said the ministry reacted quickly to the situation by giving national football fans the opportunity to watch the match live on big screens. – Bernama, January 20, 2023
